The English Cave Community Garden in Benton Park won an award in an annual competition held by the St. Louis non-profit organization Gateway Greening.

The garden, located at 1960 Provenchere Place in the south St. Louis neighborhood of Benton Park, won second place in the "new garden" category of Gateway Greening's 2008 Urban Garden Competition.

It's the first award for the garden, which is in the midst of its second season of operation. The award was announced July 1 and the English Cave gardeners were presented with a certificate, outdoor decorative frog, gardening books and a woven basket.

The English Cave Community Garden is on a 14,000-square-foot lot that's owned by the city of St. Louis.

In 2006, the Benton Park Neighborhood Association petitioned the city to lease the land for public use and was awarded a five-year lease.

The garden contains decorative plants and plots for neighborhood residents to grow fruits and vegetables.
